Reblogged from ohmu
One of the main things I loved about Ashitaka was that he never pressured San to live with the humans. She never identified with them and never would have been happy leaving the home and family she loved. And he accepted that.
Ashitaka isn’t quite as striking a character as San or Lady Eboshi who represent the two sides of the conflict. But Ashitaka’s most heroic quality and part of the reason I love him so much is his empathy. He respects nature and understands the fear of losing one’s way of life. His own culture is dying out. But at the same time he embraces his humanity and won’t villainize Eboshi and the people of Iron Town. He can see the shades of grey when the other characters see black and white and that’s why he’s so important.
